Beginner's Guide

Saya no Uta is a classic visual novel by Nitroplus, written by Gen Urobuchi. The entire story only has 2 key choice branches, but each one determines the final outcome. The game has 3 Bad Ends and one True Ending called "Blooming." While all three are technically bad endings, the Blooming ending counts as a Happy End among the BEs, and it's also the most emotionally devastating conclusion of the entire work. I recommend experiencing the endings in order, saving the True Ending route for last—that way the story reveals hit hardest.

Table of Contents

I. Ending 1: Glass Shoes (Return to Normal)

At the first choice, pick return to my original state—the patch in Fuminori's brain gets reverted.

But this choice comes at a massive cost. While Fuminori's vision returns to normal, the crimes he committed can't be erased. Someone discovers the bodies, and the protagonist gets sent straight to a psychiatric hospital, locked in a white solitary room. Saya gives him one last kiss goodbye before quietly leaving, leaving behind a love that can never be fulfilled.

This ending seems to give Fuminori a chance to return to normal, but it's actually the most selfish choice. Fuminori betrays Saya, and to preserve her most beautiful image in his mind, Saya chooses never to see him again. In the final scene, Fuminori waits in his hospital room while Saya cries silently outside the window—two people separated by walls, forever unable to touch.

II. Ending 2: Blooming (Kouji Acts Alone)

At the first choice, pick never mind (give up on returning to normal) to enter the madness route. At the second choice, Kouji picks call Fuminori.

Kouji storms the underground dungeon, defeating the tentacled Yoh and the axe-wielding Fuminori, but ultimately loses to boss Saya. Then the plot takes a sharp turn:

1. Saya and Fuminori's child is born
2. All of humanity gets infected and perishes
3. Dr. Tanbo Ryouko survives for now, but infection is only a matter of time

In this ending, Saya completes her mission. Using her last strength to bloom, she rewrites the entire world into what Fuminori sees as normal. That line "I give... this planet... to you" is the heaviest love Saya can offer.

III. Ending 3: Total Annihilation (Kouji Contacts the Doctor)

At the first choice, again pick never mind. At the second choice, Kouji picks call Dr. Tanbo Ryouko.

Kouji and the doctor team up to go together—the doctor kills Saya with a frozen bullet, but is immediately killed by the enraged Fuminori. Losing Saya, Fuminori completely breaks down and commits suicide on the spot. Kouji witnesses all of this and goes completely mad, tormented by nightmares every day.

This is the most tragic of the three Bad Ends. Even as she dies, Saya uses her last strength to crawl to Fuminori's corpse, as if caressing his cheek. Kouji can't scrape away that lump of flesh no matter how hard he tries, and can only watch as the two monsters embrace in death.

Note: This ending is the last BE before the True Ending—you must see this Bad End first to understand the weight of the True Ending.

IV. True Ending: Saya Blooms (Final Route)

To enter the True Ending, you must first complete the Ending 3 BE route. After avoiding the BE, the game automatically enters the True Ending main story.

In the end, Saya blooms carrying things called "love" and "happiness". This is the most emotionally devastating moment in the entire work, and also the core of what Gen Urobuchi wanted to express:

1. For Fuminori's sake, Saya decides to rewrite the entire world
2. She pays with her own life so Fuminori can live in a normal world
3. The dandelion metaphor runs through the whole story: when the seed meets the only one who loves it, it decides where to belong

The True Ending isn't a traditional Happy End, but within Saya and Fuminori's relationship, it's the best possible outcome. Saya completes her blooming, Fuminori gets the world he wanted, even if the price is losing each other.

V. Full Walkthrough Quick Reference

First Choice (Fuminori asks if he wants to return to normal):

  • Pick "I want to return to normal" → Directly to Ending 1 (Glass Shoes)

  • Pick "I don't need that anymore" → Enter madness route, continue to second choice

Second Choice (Kouji decides who to contact):

  • Pick "Call Fuminori" → Ending 2 (Blooming/Total Annihilation Ending)

  • Pick "Call Ryouko" → Ending 3 (Total Annihilation BE) → Avoid to enter True Ending

Recommended play order: Ending 1 → Ending 2 → Ending 3 → True Ending. This gives the most logical story reveals and maximum emotional impact. Don't look at the True Ending first—you'll spoil yourself.
